Sundowners in Sicuijor

Writer: Pip GoldsburyPip Goldsbury

I’ve lost track of time but I do know we’re now in the monsoon in Bohol, just a 2.5 hour ferry ride from Siquijor with its sunsets and turtles and fighting cocks and cliff jumps and white coral beaches...a place of pure bliss with something for all of us, whether that's mojitos as the sun goes down or crazy high cliffs to leap off. (It made for a pretty photo but I can assure you I never jumped that high! In fact, scroll to the end and, if you can handle a minute of ridiculousness, I'll suck up my pride and share the video of me trying to jump 10m in Moalboal. I look like a bloopers reel😳🤪)

The Philippines is such a conflicting place of incredible wealth and heartbreaking poverty. We’ve seen places with real estate values of NZD15,000,000 right beside bamboo huts and dirt floors. However, in spite of their poverty, the people are so kind and generous. When Em lost her Pandora bracelet (jumping off another cliff with her brother 🤦‍♀️), we thought it was gone. But someone put it on local social media, another person handed it into the police and they then scootered an hour to meet us at the port to give it back to Em before we left the island! It would’ve been so easy to take a finders keepers attitude and pawn the bracelet, but a tiny community came together to get it back to her. To put it into perspective, each of Em's eight charms are worth between $50-$150. Typically, a Filipino might earn around $150/month.

We're now getting a few days break from the sun (and a chance for my burnt back to recover!) but we’ve got zip lining, bridge swings, Chocolate Hills, whale sharks and tarsier monkeys lined up instead.
